A negative Gram stain result is not sufficient for excluding neisserial infections in asymptomatic men. The Gram stain will detect 75% of gonococcal conjunctivitis and 10-20% of gonococcal skin lesions. It is of no value in pharyngitis. Patients from whom N. gonorrhoeae is isolated are reported to the City of Chicago Board of Health. This is mandated by law.

are a Gram-negative non-spore-forming diplococcus that has a flattened shape; its size ranges between 0.6–0.8 μm. They are oxidase-positive, non-acid-fast cocci or plump rods. They can reach a diameter of around 0.6–0.8 μm and sometimes up to 1.0 × 2.0–3.0 μm. Neisseria cinerea is a commensal species grouped with the Gram-negative, oxidase-positive, and catalase-positive diplococci. It was first classified as Micrococcus cinereus by Alexander von Lingelsheim in 1906.

A 45-year-old member asked: can you get rid of neisseria gonorrhoeae? Dr. Gregory Lewis answered. 44 years experience Urology.
Gram stain and culture have been the primary methods of diagnosing N. gonorrhoeae. Gram stain is quick and inexpensive with a high sensitivity and specificity for urethral specimens (sensitivity and specificity are both 90% to 95%), however, it is much lower for endocervical and rectal specimens with both the sensitivity and specificity ranging

Oct 19, 2018 - Neisseria gonorrhoeae present in a Gram stain of a patient with gonococcal urethritis. The N gonorrhoeae are the intracellular gram-negative diplococci within the cytoplasm of the polymorphonuclear (PMN) cell marked with the small arrow. Other gram-negative diplococcic are present in the field, but are not associated with PMN cells and are not diagnostic of gonorrhea. The nuclei
